Tahitian crew Shell Va’a continued its domination of the Hawaiian Airlines Molokai Hoe on Sunday, winning the long distance outrigger canoe championship for the 12th time in 14 years.
Shell Va’a made the 41-mile journey across the Kaiwi Channel, from Hale O Lono on the Friendly Isle to Dukes Beach in Waikiki, in a time of 4 hours, 33 minutes, 36 seconds.
Fellow French Polynesian crew Team Opt placed second in 4:46:14, just beating out Hawaii island’s Red Bull Wa’a (4:46:56).
Oahu’s Ka Lahui Kai (4:48:05) was fourth, and Wailea Canoe Club’s Team Maui Jim crossed in 4:56:37, good for fifth overall.
Wailea’s other open division crew placed 22nd overall in 5:42:21.
Hawaiian Canoe Club’s masters 60-and-over crew picked up its fifth division title in six years in a time of 6:04:51 — that was not only the 39th fastest time overall, but also a few seconds better than HCC’s junior crew, which placed fourth in their division (41st overall) in 6:05:20.
Other crews included Wailea’s masters 40 (6:08:26), Kihei Canoe Club (6:26:06), Lae’ula O Kai (6:31:30) and the Wailea juniors (6:39:25).
